What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient self-empowering practice that utilizes the many facets of our “human being” to maintain health, enhance peace of mind and ultimately evolve, transform and widen our perspectives. Continually practiced with devotion, Yoga leads to happiness and freedom. In this lecture, we discuss the body-mind-spirit connection inherent in the practice. Our discussion includes classical yoga philosophy according to Patañjali and the Four Types of Yoga as explained by Vivekananda as well as the various styles and brands of yoga practiced today. Some additional topics addressed are the technical Sanskrit terms used in classical yoga, Vedānta vs. Yoga philosophy and the six Indic Darśanas, lineages including Krishnamacharya and Sivananda, Haṭha, Tantra, and Mantra yoga.We briefly address the language of yoga, Sanskrit, as well as the basic pronunciation of Sanskrit words.
